Abstract

In this paper we investigate the effect of varying surface tension in a midway positioned surfactant layer on the steady laminar motion of a viscous incompressible fluid between two parallel straight plates. The effect of the surfactant layer comes into play through the Scriven’s boundary condition at the interface separating the bulk fluids on its two sides. Two particular cases, when the surface tension is decreasing and when surface tension is increasing along the axial direction have been worked out. The streamlines for the ensuing flow has been drawn and the expressions for the centre line velocity and the skin friction on the plates evaluated. The effects of the surfactant layer parameters have then been exhibited through graphs.
